Hey, its been long I put my pen on paper, Today, I want to bless the medical students outside United State with this information. I mean those who dream to pursue their career in USA as a medical Doctor, or you are currently in United State of America with a medical Degree and you don’t know about the steps on pursuing your career.
The USMLE guide I am putting out are three steps article, so be patient with me as i put this article together.
I always advice young and ambitious medical students to start looking at the below information as soon as they step their legs into Clinical. That means, you have passed your first MB exam.
So if you are just moving to Clinical, Congratulation!!, you came early, if you are almost graduating, Congratulation also!!, this is the best time for you start completing the exam before you start engaging in real word experiment.
Working as a medical Doctor is strenuous and could be time consuming, so studying for exam like the United State Medical License Exam (USMLE) might not be easy, but very possible that’s why its also good to start the processes while in school.
So whatever level you are, you are welcome and congratulation again!!.
So lets get the ball rolling.
To practice in United State of America as a Medical Doctor or Nurses, you are require to seat, write and pass either the USMLE or the NCLEX exam. Today this topic are for the Doctors not the nurses. If you need steps on NCLEX, let me know. You will get steps straight in your email.
United State Medical License Exam (USMLE)
The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a three-step examination program for medical licensure in the United States sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) that physicians with a medical degree and international medical graduates must pass after successful completion of medical training to receive their medical license and begin practicing medicine.
If you need read more about the exam, please use google search. Today, my article is to look on how you can go about writing and practicing medicine in USA and not the defination.
Step 1
You will have to search for your school you got your degree from on this site to be sure you are eligible to write USMLE. Click the link below and follow the below steps:
i. https://www.wdoms.org/ and click on Search Directory.
ii. Enter Country you are currently studying medicine or country you graduated medicine from.
iii. Enter your medical school name ( I will advice you skip this, leave it blank because sometime, you might not spell it right).
iv. Enter City ( If your country is like Nigeria, please do not enter city because you might not see result, just leave it blank. All other countries can put their state.
v. Click on Search ( If you find your school, congratulation, you are eligible to continue reading. If not, I am sorry, do not worry about USMLE as your school is not recognized to write this exam.
Step 2
After you have confirmed that you are eligible to write the USMLE exam, please go to this website below and follow the steps:
i. Click on the link: https://www.ecfmg.org/
ii. Click on-line Services at the top menu bar and a drop down allow will be display
iii. Click on: IWA-Interactive Web Application to register and request for an ID number.
Note: The number you will get is called: USMLE Identification Number. Please dont loose this number, save it and keep it.
Since you are just doing this for the first time, please click on (If you have never been issued a USMLE/ECFMG Identification Number and want to request one, click here.) You will be taken to where to continue, please read all stage carefully and complete your application.
You will be require to Fill form 183, fill out all the details legibly with blue ink, go to your college or medical school, the dean of your medical school, would need to personally sign and stamp this form, once its ready, please put it in an envelop and mail to the address below with your Dean name and Phone number.

Most likely, your dean will send this paper for you or they will assigned you to pay for courier that will pick it up and delievered to United State. For processing and confirmation, it might take 2 to 3 weeks, so be patient. After confirmation, you will get an email that will be sent to your email with your USMLE ID Number.
Once you received your confirmation, you will have access to the portal on the ECFMG
i. click on the link https://www.ecfmg.org/
ii. Click on IWAA - Interactive Web Application and sign in with your ID Number and password given.
iii. Once you successfully logged in Click on start start "New USMLE Step 1 Application" please read the following and continue to click on next. Click on the box that show Step 1 and follow the prompt to choose the eligibility period that will allow you to take the exam. Example (Sept 1st - Dec. 31st). If you choose this period, you will only be allow to do the exam this period. Click next and you will be require to make payment.
iv. Once payment is confirmed, you will be email confirmation, receipt and permit for your exam. This might take some time, please be patient, you will sure get an email that indicate that your schedule and permit is ready.
Note: You will received PDF with your schedule and permit, on the top of the PDF file, you will see a number called “schedule ID: * please copy this number and go to prometric website.
i. Click on https://www.prometric.com/
ii. Click on "Test Takers" and a drop down will show, click on "Find my Exam" put "USMLE" on the search box to find information on how to go about writing your exam. You will have to choose country, exam center and the date inwhich you want to do your exam.
Note: Please make sure you have access to the prometric center and there is availability for you to write the exam before you enrol and make payment because after payment and date choosen, you are on your own.
This first stage exam will come from first aid and uworld, please get the latest material for the First AID USMLE Steps 1 for the current year you are writing.
